About Of The Void Martial Arts
Mastering the Elements, Becoming the Void
Of The Void Martial Arts is a Crestwood, Kentucky martial arts school built on a simple belief: within every student lies a Void—the untapped potential for an ideal future waiting to be discovered, and the right training brings it out.
We work with kids, teens, and adults, building practical self-defense skills alongside real peace, confidence, and strength. Every class is guided by instructors who know our students by name and are invested in their growth on and off the mat.

Our Story
Of The Void Martial Arts began with a simple belief: martial arts should shape character, not simply teach technique. After years of teaching and coaching, Sensei Charles Alston wanted to build a school offering martial arts in Crestwood, KY where children, teens, and adults are known by name, challenged to grow, and surrounded by mentors who genuinely care about who they're becoming. That's why Of The Void Martial Arts was founded, and why it has grown into a full program serving families throughout Crestwood and Oldham County, built around discipline, respect, and genuine mentorship.
Meet Sensei Charles

I don't believe martial arts is about creating fighters. I believe it's about helping people discover what they're capable of becoming. That's why I opened Of The Void Martial Arts. My path here started far from Crestwood, and it took years of training, teaching, and coaching before I understood what I actually wanted to build: a school where every student is known by name, challenged to grow, and surrounded by mentors who believe in them.
I chose Pagoda Ryu because of the discipline and structure it gave me, and I brought in Panantukan because real growth has to hold up outside the dojo, not just inside it. My wife, Sinthuya, and our own children are a big part of why Dragon Academy exists. I built it by asking a simple question: if my own kids were spending four hours somewhere after school, what kind of place would I want them in?
That same question shapes everything we do here, for every student who walks through our doors, at every age. More than anything, I want to build a family and a community here — a place where students and their families belong, grow, and find peace, confidence, and strength together.
Our Martial Arts: Pagoda Ryu & Panantukan

We didn't build our curriculum around Pagoda Ryu Karate and Panantukan because it was flashy. We chose it because, together, these arts develop discipline, confidence, adaptability, and practical self-defense for students of every age. Pagoda Ryu provides the structure: strong stances, sharp strikes, and the patience built through kata and drilling.
Panantukan, the Filipino art of practical hand fighting, provides the adaptability: fluid movement, real distance control, and the ability to respond to real situations rather than choreographed ones.
Together they form a complete system. Just as the Void takes the shape of whatever fills it, our students learn to blend structure with flow, becoming capable in both martial arts and everyday life.

What Makes Of The Void Martial Arts Different?
Plenty of schools offer karate in Crestwood or general self-defense classes, but most only teach one art, whether that's a single traditional style or a single combat sport. At Of The Void Martial Arts, every class is built around three ideas.
Potential: every student already carries untapped potential, and our job is to help them discover it.
Mentorship: we keep classes small and mentorship-driven, so instructors actually know every student's name and goals, rather than moving students through a high-volume class schedule.
Complete Development: Pagoda Ryu gives our students structure and discipline, and Panantukan gives them adaptability and real-world self-defense, together forming a complete system most schools don't offer.
We're proud of any student who wants to compete, but we're not a tournament factory: we measure success by the character our students build, not trophies or belts. For families across Crestwood and Oldham County martial arts options, that combination of potential, mentorship, and complete development is what makes Of The Void Martial Arts different.
